Wayne was born in Plymouth and moved to Co Durham where at the age of 12 he won the Leverhulme scholarship to the Royal Ballet School. In 1973 he became a Principal Dancer and appeared in over 50 major roles created for him by Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth Macmillan, Dame Ninette de Valois, Rudolf Nureyev, Joe Layton and John Neumeier. His choreographic work includes David and Goliath – London Contemporary Dance & San Francisco Ballet, Savoy Suite – English National Ballet, Soldiers Tale and The Hot Shoe Show – BBC, Wonderland – National Youth Ballet, The Wizard of Oz – London Studio Centre, The Point, Salad Days, Roll Over Jehovah, Carousel, Death on the Nile, Aspects of Dance, Bits and Pieces, World of Classical Ballet, History of Dance, Hollywood and Broadway. He also formed his own dance company, DASH which appeared in the West End & toured the world.

He recently endured a stint in the jungle in I’m a Celebrity get me out of Here. This year he will play one of the ugly sisters for the Royal Ballet in Covent Garden and the Opera House New York. Wayne has 2 entries in the Guinness Book of Records, show Business Personality of the Year 1984, Subject of This is Your Life, Melvyn Braggs South Bank show, honorary degrees from the universities of Exeter and Teeside. Patron of SW Region of Royal Academy of Dance, the British Ballet Organisation, the Dance Teachers Benevolent Fund. 1998 received OBE. His publications include Variations on Wayne Sleep and his autobiography precious Little Sleep. He has set up a charity The Wayne Sleep Dance Scholarship to raise funds for talented students training and regularly passes on his knowledge at dance workshops throughout the world.
